Chessed And Zdaka = Kindness And Charity Work

The Jewish Community of Vienna (Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien, = IKG) has always been known for being kind to the poor and very generous in their charity efforts – following this tradition, a charity organisation, called "OHEL RACHEL" was founded in the year 1922 with the aim to provide food to those members of the Jewish community living in Vienna who were facing bitter hardship due to poverty.

The organisation’s soup kitchen served meals to poor people every day. It was located in the second district of Vienna (1020), on the corner of Schwarzingergasse nr. 8 to Kleine Pfarrgasse nr. 8.
In the year 1938 the political regime enforced the closing of the soup kitchen, forbid the organisation as a whole and confiscated all the organization’s financial means.

In 1999 the new era of "Ohel Rahel" started, and just like as in the old days, those people of the Jewish community who are in urgent and great need of help, benefit from the work of the re-founded organisation.
